In March 2023, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) released a revision of the toy-specific element migration standard ISO 8124-3:2020,
becoming ISO 8124-3:2020+Amd.1:2023. The amendments are effective immediately.
Compared with the previous version, ISO 8124-3:2020+Amd.1:2023 includes the following major changes:
1. For modeling clay:
Increase the migration limit of boron (B) to 3750 mg/kg;
Revise the barium (Ba) migration limit from 250 mg/kg to 350 mg/kg.
2. For putty:
Increase the migration limit of boron (B) to 3750 mg/kg;
Reduce the migration limits of 4 elements (Ba, Cd, Cr, Hg) to be consistent with modeling clay.
3. For crystal slime:
Increase the migration limit of boron (B) to 1250 mg/kg;
Reduce the migration limits of 8 elements (Sb, As, Ba, Cd, Cr, Pb, Hg, Se) to be consistent with finger paints.
Therefore, the element migration limits of various toy materials are as follows:
Maximum limit requirements for migrating elements in toy materials (ISO 8124-3:2020+Amd.1:2023)
Toy materials migration limit (mg/k) | element
antimony(Sb) | arsenic(As) | barium(Ba) | cadmium(Cd) | chromium | lead | HG | selenium | boron(B)
Other toy materials (except modeling clay and putty, finger paint, crystal clay) | 60 | 25 | 1000 | 75 | 60 | 90 | 60 | 500 | -- |
Modeling clay and putty | 60 | 25 | 350 | 50 | 25 | 90 | 25 | 500 | 3750 |
finger paint | 10 | 10 | 350 | 15 | 25 | 25 | 10 | 50 | -- |
crystal mud | 10 | 10 | 350 | 15 | 25 | 25 | 10 | 50 | 1250 |
Modeling clay and putty is defined as a variable solid or semi-solid mixture that retains its shape and form when molded into a certain shape, intended to express the image of an object through hand manipulation or extrusion through toys. Pressed into a specific shape. Crystal slime is defined as a water-based gel or gel-like material, transparent or colored, viscous, slippery, usually a non-Newtonian fluid, which can be played by hand manipulation, kneading and stretching.
